How to Pair Fruit Wine with Food

Fruit wine are prefect for pairing with food because there is such a large variety of flavours. Fruit winemakers are often more adventurous than their grape counterparts, so don’t be afraid to get creative.

What is Fruit Wine?

Fruit wine is a blanket term for fermented alcoholic beverages made from fruits and berries rather than grapes. Fruit wine are often called country wines or by the name of the fruit they are made from, such as Blackberry Wine.

Fruit Wine & Food Pairing Tips

  • Pair strong flavor wines with strong flavored food and lighter wines with lighter food
  • Pair acidic foods with acidic wines
    • For example: an acidic Raspberry Wine goes well with a goat cheese salad with a vinaigrette dressing, but does not pair well with a beef stew
  • The wine should be sweeter than the food
  • In most cases pair the wine to the sauce rather than the food
  • Generally pair light color wines with fish and chicken
  • Generally pair darker color wines with red meats with higher fat content
    • For example: pair a dry blackberry wine with juicy beef steak
  • Pair heavily oaked wines with smokey BBQ meats
  • Generally create contrasting pairings with sparkling wine
  • Drink and eat what you like and get creative
    • Feel free to experiment and color outside the lines

Complementary Pairings vs Contrasting Pairings

A complementary pairing creates balance by amplifying shared flavor compounds; such as dark roast coffee and dark chocolate (try this Blackberry and Chocolate Fondue recipe). Contrasting food pairings amplify the flavors by pitting different flavors against each other (think sweet and sour pork).

Focus on the main flavors of the both the wine and the dish. How sweet, acidic, tannic, or bitter is the fruit wine? How creamy (fat), spicy, salty, acidic, sweet, or bitter is the main dish you are pairing? Use the chart below to create fruit wine pairings that complement or contrast the
